Kiev - Ukrainian police on Wednesday arrested a Cuban national attempting to smuggle more than 5,000 cigars into the former Soviet republic. The detention took place at Kiev's Boryspil airport after the suspect, a man aged 49, arrived on a flight from Amsterdam with the cigars in his luggage.
The confiscated cigars weighed more than 50 kilogrammes and were worth about 40,000 dollars, Ukraine border police spokesman told the Interfax news agency.
The man faces a potential jail sentence of five years if convicted of attempted smuggling, according to the report.
Cigarette smuggling is rampant in Ukraine, but the traffic is usually outbound, with illicit shippers attempting to take advantage of Ukraine's cheap cigarette prices for high profit resale in European Union nations.
