The tobacco planters of Las Tunas province began the sowing of some 1, 475 hectares of that leaf, with which they help so that Cuba recovers as soon as possible from the severe damages, caused in that branch by the hurricane Ike, at beginnings of last month.
Executives of the tobacco sector in the territory told Tiempo21 that to guarantee the success of the campaign 2008-2009 more than half of those 53 partially damaged houses were already restored and they create conditions to rebuild those 235 totally destroyed ones by the powerful natural disaster.
Some forest zones and several facilities belonging to the tobacco company of Las Tunas, located 690 kilometers from Havana, have been also rehabilitated in this territory whose farmers undertook
the cultivation of the aromatic leaf hardly one decade ago, and they already produce some 1, 800 tons annually.
Every year Cuba exports more than 100 millions of cigars, well-known generally as Habanos which have a big demand all over the world for their high quality.
