David Beckham's spokesman last night confirmed that the England and LA Galaxy star has smoked cigars, after reports that he had acquired a taste for hand-rolled Cubans.
The Sun newspaper claimed that Beckham has taken to smoking cigars in the garden of his home after picking up the habit at showbusiness parties.
It claimed that the midfielder, who has fostered a clean-living reputation, prefers cigars to cigarettes because he believes they are more healthy.
Earlier this week it emerged that Beckham has suffered from asthma since childhood, after he was photographed using an inhaler ahead of the MLS Cup final.
A family friend told the newspaper that Beckham had been banned from lighting up inside by his wife Victoria, in order to protect their children from the smoke.
"He loves the taste. I think he likes the image too. Lots of Hollywood stars smoke them," the friend was quoted as saying.
"It's strange to see such an athlete as Becks smoking. But he doesn't have any other vices. Of course he only smokes the best - they're usually fifty-dollar-a-pop Cohibas."
Beckham's spokesman insisted that the footballer was not a regular smoker. "He may have had a puff on a cigar once or twice in the past to make a celebration but that is it."
